Empire Espresso
Open for about one year, Empire Espresso has quickly established itself as a serious player in the Toronto café scene, with superb coffee (one of the prettiest espresso machines in the city) and seriously delicious treats. Empire is located in the heart of Toronto’s Little Italy, at 668 College Street.
So while the coffee definitely deserves a shout out, it’s the treats that earned it a BOOM Legendary Service Award, and more specifically, the cinnamon buns.
It’s almost a crime to call the cinnamon buns legendary – because they achieve a sublime deliciousness that transcends legendary. Dare I call them – really, really, really good!
The owner, Lisa Kutsukake, is the genius behind the Empire Espresso cinnamon bun. She bakes them fresh every day (like duh!) – and competition for them is fierce, so don’t wait until end of day to get yours. She puts them out on the counter, usually still in the baking pan – and when they’re gone for the day, it’s over.
The bun itself is firm – but still has that squishy yumminess.
The icing probably deserves its own legendary service award. It captures that perfect combination of crunchiness and sweetness, without becoming sickly.
